Continued from another thread contemplating what to do with the fellowship keyword, the idea was brought up of making it mean something like this:
"While you can spot only fellowship companions in the fellowship, each companion is Ring-bound."
People seemed to like that idea, but were curious (as was I) what cards might be more or less useful should EVERY companion suddenly be Ring-bound.
So, I compiled a list.
NOTE: All cards marked with a # are Standard-legal. All others are legal only in non-Standard formats.
Here’s a list of all the cards I can find that would help Ring-bound companions, or have text that keys off of them:
Gondor:
Arrows Thick in the Air
Curse Them
Damrod, Ranger of Ithilien
Forbidden Pool
Forests of Ithilien
Gondorian Ranger
Mablung, Soldier of Gondor
New Errand
Ranger’s Bow
Ruins of Osgiliath
Shire:
Brace of Coneys
Light Shining Faintly
Sam’s Pack
Morgai Foothills #
Mithril-coat, Dwarf-mail #
Phial of Galadriel, The Light of Earendil #
There are some other really neat cards like Faramir, Ithilien Ranger, Faramir’s Cloak, Frodo, Tired Traveller, and You Must Help Us that would be fantastic, but wouldn’t work because they would they require a non-fellowship companion, meaning your normally-unbound companions would no longer be Ring-bound.
Now, the cards that would hurt them.
Raider:
Eastern Emyn Muil
Gathering to the Summons
Howl of Harad (actually might be LESS powerful with so many RB companions)
Southron Assassin (ditto here)
Haradrim Marksman (and DEFINATELY here)
Southron Commander (very deadly since the FP player can’t opt out! )
Gollum:
Gollum, Old Villain
Chasm’s Edge (OUCH!) #
Sauron:
Eye of Barad-dur (OUCH again!)
Barren Land (oh, the humanity!) #
Wraith:
Ulaire Nertea, Winged Hunter (kinda weakened with so many RB companions)
Ulaire Nelya, Black-Mantled Wraith (just MEAN!) #
Ulaire Otsea, Black-Mantled Wraith (the unbound opt-out is no longer an option) #
Orc:
Orc Crusher (LOTS of burden potential) #
There’s something else to consider: since you wouldn’t have any unbound companions, none of these cards could be used (leaving out non-fellowship companions and cards, since they couldn’t be used anyway):
Stout and Strong
Counts But One #
Arrow and Blade
A Grey Ship #
Treebeard, Earthborn
Treebeard, Oldest Living Thing
Birchseed, Tall Statesman (forced to discard for ability)
Down From the Hills
Forest Guardian (forced to discard for ability)
Lindenroot, Elder Shepherd (forced to discard)
Boomed and Trumpeted
Ent Moot
Have Patience #
Light the Beacons #
Peace of Mind #
Let Us Not Tarry #
Mighty Steed #
Not the First Halfling #
One Last Surprise #
At His Command #
Sapling of the White Tree #
Blade of Gondor, Sword of Boromir (ability does not work) #
Confronting the Eye #
Guardian #
Escape
Knocked on the Head
Store-room
Warmed Up a Bit
Kept Safe
Long Slow Wrath
Closer and Closer He Bent #
So Fair, So Desperate #
Unheeded #
We Shall Meet Again Soon #
Everyone Knows #
Salt from the Shire (skirmish ability can’t be used) #
A Task Now to Be Done #
Measure of Comfort #
On the plus side, there are some Shadow cards that couldn’t touch you if every companion were Ring-bound:
Over the Isen
Horribly Strong #
Brought Back Alive
Elite Crossbowmen
Grima, Son of Galmod
Grima, Wormtongue (finally, a REALLY effective way to shut him down )
Grima, Chief Counselor (him too!)
Haunting Her Steps
Men Will Fall
No Dawn for Men
Orthanc Champion
Ranged Commander (rendered MOSTLY useless)
Uruk Crossbowman
Uruk Follower
Uruk Hunter
Uruk Pursuer
Volley Fire
Where Has Grima Stowed It?
Bloodthirsty #
Fearsome Dunlending #
Dunlending Zealot #
Trail of Terror #
Dunlending Trapper #
Lying Counsel #
Rapid Reload (main ability does not work) #
Entrapping Orc #
Black Land Overlord #
Easterling Guard
Easterling Lieutenant
Cast Unto the Winds #
Far Harad Mercenaries #
Stampeded (second part does not work) #
Gorgoroth Assassin #
Window of the Eye #
Intimidating Uruk #
Our Foes Are Weak #
Suppressing Uruk #
Tempest of War (resistance reduction does not work) #
Uruk Desecrator #
Assault Commander #
Uruk Blitz (only the resistance reduction does not work) #
Between Nazgul and Prey #
Black Dart #
Morgul Vanguard #
Sense of Obligation #
Shadowy Mount (assignment action rendered useless) #
Ulaire Enquea, Sixth of the Nine Riders (only effective if there are at least 6 companions) #
WHEW!
I’ll let you draw your own conclusions, but there are plenty of cards that would help out if every companion were Ring-bound, but there are others that would suddenly become downright deadly. All in all, I think it would balance out once players adjusted and found which of the above cards worked best for them. ’Twould certainly make for an interesting new cat-and-mouse way of playing the game! |

Check out Lasting Alliances, The Road Ahead, and Ages of Middle-earth, three of my five dream card sets that make up Wars of the Ring. Oh, and I have a trade list now!

It would be very interesting. My first thought was, "Hey, that’s insane! You can now use all of those crazy ring-bound ranger wounding cards now!" But now that I look at it, it does balance because of the cards you can’t use on your companions. Good idea.
Ooh, I predict Chasm’s Edge as a cutting edge card now... |

Hmm I think it balances itself out in that there aren’t many shadow cards that affect ringbound companions and there are a lot of shadow cards that won’t affect them, but there are a fair few cards that affect lots of companions and multiple-culture fellowships, so it kinda nicely balances itself out.
I think it’s a good rule, and far more imaginitive than the Hunters +X strength. |

Aye, that and (in Expanded play) Eye of Barad-dur are probably the ultimate anti-mass-Ring-bound companions cards, followed very closely by Barren Land and Ulaire Nelya, Black-Mantled Wraith and Ulaire Otsea, Black-Mantled Wraith. Mass wounds/exertions!
But with 4x Chasm’s Edge and a moderate fellowship of 5 Ring-bound companions, you’re looking at a strength 25 Gollum! Yoikes! Pair it with Gollum, Old Villain for some REAL fun. Mwaha! |

it will only be cutting edge IF we decide to use fellowship like this. and that means you have to get your player groups to do it like this and such. it is an idea in its beginning stages. IMHO looking at this list really its only benefit is not being hit by that one list of cards. the cards you could use and not that good, and outweighed by the cards you couldn’t. |

With fellowship Aragorn and Boromir, it is AWESOME in Expanded play, because you can unlock all those Ring-bound Man cards, as well as having access to Sam’s Pack and the awesomeness that is the Light Shining Faintly/Brace of Coneys combo. Otherwise, it does lose some of its punch, yes. |
