Back when I used to play MtG in Skrye Magazine they would give cards a rating of 1 to 5 was a card that had what they called stand alone value. I know that LotR is different but I have put together a list of cards that I would consider 5’s on the “stand alone” scale.
These are the qualifications for I use to judge Stand Alone Cards:
Card Economy: A single card generates more than it costs or gives you a 2 for 1 type bonus
More than one use or purpose or it can be used in different strategies
Usability: useful in most cases
Value: twilight cost vs effect
Hand extension: Gives you more resources than generally allowed
Unique to culture as in culture does not have much possession removal so card “x” is good
In general a card that should be considered whenever you use a certain culture
By playing 1 card the entire play of the match can be affected
Heres what I came up with let me know what you think:
Gimli’s Battle Axe, Trusted Weapon (more than 1 effect plus the usual +2)
Out of Darkness (pump and draws cards)
Blood Runs Chill (Destroys everything with a good tanked up Dwarf one of the best cards in the game)
Durin III, Dwarven Lord (Cheap when played with other dwarves and serious tank)
Ring of Fury (obviously Dam+2 and heals)
No Pauses, No Spills (duh)
Stalwart Support (free to play and makes dwarves cycle like mad)
Dwarf-Lords (makes Gimli RB almost indestructable)
Gloin, Son of Groin (Basically anything that can make you draw 3 cards a turn is good)
Armor of Khazad
Ring of Artifice
Legolas, Fearless Marksman (Archer, direct wounding and cycle orlose initiative)
Shadow Between (cycle and heal)
Farewell to Lorien (non cultural healing)
Refuge (more non cultural healing plus the ability to cycle Thanks NB)
Nocked (Direct wounding)
Seclusion (utility cards are important to any good deck)
City of the Trees (drawing more cards than your opponent gives you an advantage)
Celeborn, The Wise (hand extension)
Legolas, Of the Woodland Realm (Archer Hunter and special ability)
Lothlorien Guides (utility)
Namarie (utility)
Orophin, Silvan Elf (hunter direct wounding)
Rumil, Silvan Elf (hunter direct wounding)
Gandalf, Manager of Wizards (lose initiative, and uses w/telepathy cards as well as built in skirmish event)
Terrible and Evil (direct wounding)
Gandalf, Leader of Men (Gandalf in your starting fellowship has many advantages esp if you can have another comp w/him)
Saved From the Fire (nuf said)
Radagast, The Brown (double move and a strong comp)
Sent Back (totally unique card to be able to play comps afer they die and the other ability to boot)
Gandalf, Leader of the Company (one of the best splash comps)
Traveled Leader (this card can totally turn the tides when your opponent thinks they have you beat you swap in Caras Galadhon or get rid of thier Cavern Entrance)
Pallando, Far-Travelling One (dual uses w condition removal and strength bonus)
Grimbeorn, Beorning Chieftain (splashable and high vitalaty w/good special ability)
Gandalf, Returned ("search your deck" if a card says this it is usually worth playing)
Shadowfax, Greatest of the Mearas (wrecks corruption and +1 accross the board, awesome)
Captured by the Ring (search your deck and add a threat)
Gollum, Dark as Darkness (many different abilities and good in losts of different decks)
Shelob, Eater of Light (search your deck for a possession)
Still Far Ahead (free site manipulation w/cost reduction)
Web (hand extension)
Shelob, Her Ladyship (fierce, enduring, 8 vitality and excludes the best comp from skirmish that is a lot of goodies)
Led Astray (adds twilight, site manipulation)
Deagol, Fateful Finder (search your deck)
Naked Waste (pumps any ringbearer and hand extension in a Smeagol heavy deck)
Not This Time (OP but awesome using Captured by the Ring you can kill a 3 vitality comp almost every turn with this bad boy)
Anduril, Flame of the West (Dam +1 vital boost and site manipulation)
Aragorn, Driven By Need (pumps with threats and removes 3 for 2 exertions)
Derufin (blows crap up)
Faramir, Wizard’s Pupil (laundry list of stuff I always wanted to make a deck based on this card)
Denethor, Lord of Minas Tirith (search your deck althouggh you must be careful)
Isildur, Heir of Elendil (hand extension)
Aragorn, Thorongil (Best single comp in the game should be in most decks)
Aragorn’s Bow, Ranger’s Longbow (Best possesion in the game should be in most decks)
Ithilien Blade (very powerful in early game but needs help later onto keep its power Thanks SoP)

Hmm... cool list, but as far as stand alone cards go, I’m don’t think Durin III should be on the list. Needing to spot 2 other dwarves limits him to much. |

No, you just need 2 dwarves for a twilight reduction. As a companion, he’s still a beast. |

Come on, write it! I’d probably read it, who knows? I might learn something from it. |
In his eyes was the look of a hunted beast seeking some gap in the ring of his enemies. |

Spammers really are amazing creatures. You can learn all there is to know about their ways in a month. And yet, after a hundred years, they can still surprise you. |

tech no. the card itself really isn’t that good. it is the strategy. I remember someone saying that they knew a guy who had the deck and won but barely ever used it.
personally I think you should have elendil in there and where the tech is IB? |

SoP Elendil is an awesome card but he is not very playable in anything but a Gondor deck that is why I didn’t include him. I did add IB though, and a few more comments. NB I also added Refuge. Thanks guys. |
