The moment I saw AnxiousChieftain’s killer combo, I proceeded to apply the strategy of the combo and make it into a deck suitable for open play. Here’s my Fruit Loop deck:

Gimli, Bearer of Grudges
The One Ring, The Binding Ring

(no sitepath included - all you need is any valid combination of nine sites from the war of the ring/hunters blocks)

Bid 0, no matter what. It doesn’t matter if you go first or second, because the farthest your opponent is possibly get by the time you’re at site 3 is site 7. Wink The first thing you do always - add 2 burdens to slap Ring of Fury on Gimli (assuming you don’t draw it in your starting hand). His resistance remains effectively the same, but that’s one more card out of your deck, and more chances to draw the cards you need. Cool

Free Peoples (30)

Gandalf, Leader of Men (starting)
Ranger of Osgiliath (starting)
Smeagol, Poor Creature (starting)
Aragorn, Driven by Need x3
Forest Guardian
Ent Avenger
Treebeard, Keeper of the Watchwood
Deor
Ent Draught x2
The Saga of Elendil
Calculated Risk x3
Change of Plans
Rest by Blind Night x2
Last Throw
Preparations
Steadfast Champion
Memories of Darkness
Fell Deeds Awake
No Safe Places
For the Mark
Hall of Our Fathers
Seeing Stone of Orthanc x2
Ring of Fury

Shadow (30)

Hides x4
Captured by the Ring x4
Gollum, Old Villain
A Shadow Rises
Attack on Helm’s Deep
Saruman’s Ambition
They Came From Mordor
Great Cost
Tempest of War
Last Days
Fill With Fear
Unending Life
Weapons of Control
Trail of Terror
Worthy of Mordor
Lingering Shadow
Raiders From the East
Shingle in a Storm
Swarming Like Beetles
Unforgiving Depths
Countless Companies
Burning of Westfold
Unabated In Malice
Over the Isen

...seem strange?
I’ll walk you through it.

I was thinking, looking at all of my cards, trying to decide what shadow would best go with this deck, especially since you’d only be playing minions to site 3, at the most. Then it hit me - I needed a shadow with only 1 minion - Gollum. Why? He’s cheap, and cycles like crazy. Plus, it sifts cards out of my deck with Captured by the Ring. There are only 5 cards out of the 30 on the shadow side that cost anything to play: 4 Hides, and Gollum. Everything else costs 0. Pretty sweet huh? Sure, it’s a bunch of random 0 cost conditions, but those conditions are essential to the deck because:

1) They don’t require any additional costs, such as spotting or exerting
2) They cost 0 twilight

In essence, every shadow phase, you can simply empty your hand of all shadow cards, or save them and combine them with the unnecessary Free People’s cards and use Gollum’s ability to unsuspectingly destroy a companion. Plus, when you play Hides, you get to draw more cards (that’s the only reason why I included them in this deck Wink ). Oh, yes, and Unabated in Malice has the potential to make Gollum a minimum of strength +10, if you have one condition of each culture out. And then there’s the additional strength if they have a multi-culture fellowship Twisted Evil.
In essence the sites and conditions don’t matter. As long as the conditions cost 0 twilight and don’t require you to spot or exert anything, they will work in this deck. I just wanted to have 1 copy of several different conditions to make a "rainbow splash" of shadow conditions, if you will Wink. I just got lazy after a while and grabbed some conditions from my rare binder instead of looking through my common/uncommon cards.

This is the easiest budget shadow ever. The only rares you really need are Hides. Everything else can be common/uncommon. I used an Ent Avenger and a Forest Guardian because I don’t have 2 Forest Guardians, I used Calculated Risk instead of No Pauses, No Spills, and I used a The Saga of Elendil because I only had 2 Ent Draught. Plus, the Binding Ring replaces the need for another Ent Draught, so that saved a good slot in the deck design. Cool You can use whatever you feel fits your budget best.

This deck cycles like mad. Seriously, you’re decking yourself at site 3; what could be better? How about a waltz to site 9? That’s where the fun begins - that’s the essence of the combo. Read AC’s step by step instructions on how to execute it with the link below (or up top). Have fun, and please comment and critique!

Let’s see anyone else come up with that, lol!

BTW, I’m curious, what was your gut reaction when you first saw the shadow side before you read the explanation? Wink

Thanks. Cool

I’d already seen the same idea for the Shadow side before, but it was cool getting a list of conditions you could use for it.

Yeah, those were just the first ones that I pulled from my boxes of c/u - but it is colorful. Very Happy you might actually get to use some of the conditions abilities when playing this deck, i think. Wink
